Bad to the Bone: Analyzing & Assessing Dog Bites

with Cara Shannon , JD,

Understanding the potential damage a dog is likely to do in future aggressive incidents is one of the most important skills you can have when working with behavior problems. Building on the work begun by Dr. Ian Dunbar in categorizing dog bites through the use of a linear hierarchy and consulting with a veterinary behaviorist, emergency room veterinarian, emergency room physician, general practice physician, and many experts in the field of canine behavior, Cara Shannon presents comprehensive bite hierarchies for analyzing bites to humans and bites to other dogs. Cara then uses photos and case studies to help consultants gain fluency in applying the hierarchy to actual cases and bites.

“This presentation should be used by all people involved with dogs that get aggressive to be able to talk to others with a common language that describes the behavior and accurately gages the severity of the incident. Too often people use words like “vicious” for every aggressive event they encounter.”

– Ken Mc Cort, Canid expert and behavior consultant, Four Paws Training

“Wow!!!! I just finished watching the video for the first time….absolutely FANTASTIC!!
It was well worth the wait. The detailed information that Cara and group has developed is astounding. The new hierachies are so detailed and explained so thoroughly….I do believe that this will change the way we view dog bites. Job well done!!!!!

I was speaking with a vet last week regarding bites who had no idea about bite levels…I can’t wait to share this information with him. “
