In this presentation, Cara Vacchiano discusses her extremely popular and successful reactive dog class. Although this class is ostensibly designed for dogs that are reactive on leash, the dogs that attend often have dog-dog issues beyond the leash, as well. Cara’s simple yet effective formula for working with these dogs will help you and your clients see more success whether you’re holding reactive dog classes or only doing private consultations.
Cara Shannon
Cara Shannon began her love of dogs and dog behavior while working with her German Shepherd puppy, Joby, over 16 years ago. When she later adopted Buddy and Chance, both dogs with aggression and fear issues, her love of canine behavior was solidified. Although she has been training dogs since 1993, she decided to hang up her law degree and follow this passion full time in 2005, when she founded Buddy’s Chance. Cara studied with Bob Bailey, Susan Smith, Dr. Susan Friedman, Terry Ryan, Kathy Sdao, Dr. Ray Coppinger, Ken Ramirez, and many more, and served as the Vice President of the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers. Cara is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer and CAP1 certified. Cara holds a Juris Doctorate from the University of Connecticut School of Law. Cara works with dogs with advanced behavior issues like aggression, fear, and anxiety and has designed one-of-a-kind training classes to help clients successfully address reactivity and aggression towards people and other dogs. She now shares these methods with other dog trainers across the country.
Cara is the Author of “Bad to the Bone: Analyzing and Assessing Dog Bites,” a DVD designed to teach other dog behavior consultants to assess the severity of dogs bites. Cara runs an Austin dog training center in Austin, Texas where she teaches group classes and provides behavior consultation to dog owners. Her clients bring dogs from all parts of the state to train with her, traveling several hours to work with her.
