Do it! Ditch it! Delegate it!
One of the most difficult things about being a small business owner is staying motivated. For those of us who work alone and don’t even have staff, we really miss having a colleague to talk to about our goals and problems. It can also become hard to get things done since we have no one to account to except ourselves! We’re all self-motivated, but even self-motivated people need occasional help.
Time management can help, but one is still the loneliest number! Not being able to tap into the creativity and wisdom of colleagues can cause stagnation, if we’re not careful. So, I’ve created a support group called “Do it! Ditch it! Delegate it!” This is a Yahoogroup, and will be very focused toward getting stuff done. Below is the description of the group, as well as the rules. If you’re interested in joining, send an e-mail to email@example.com; or you can go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ditchit.
This group is a focused support group for solopreneurs wanting to get stuff done! It is not a discussion group, per se; the rules are very specific and you need to stay within the rules. The rules for participation are sent to you upon enrollment. Basically, we work for an hour, report in to the list, work for another hour, etc. You don’t have to participate every day, but you should plan on participating once a week or more, to get the most out of the project.
HOW IT WORKS:
On the day you want to get a bunch of stuff done, at the top of the hour send an e-mail to the list stating what you want to accomplish within the next two hours. (Please be realistic.)
When participating, please use the Central time zone (Austin, TX, if you use a converter) to figure the hour – you’ll probably just need to figure it out once, and then you’ll know if you’re an even or odd number of hours different from Austin (the exception being those areas that don’t change times twice a year, and they’ll just have to keep track!). I.e.,
Eastern time: 9:00am (so you’ll be able to get started during odd
Central time: 10:00am (participates during even hours)
Mountain time:11:00am (participates during odd hours)
Pacific time: 12:00pm (participates during even hours)
Once you’ve sent your e-mail, set your timer and get to work! Please calculate how many minutes are left in the current hour – you want to end at the top of the hour.
Hours start at the top of the hour (i.e., 8:00am-10:00am, 10:00am-12:00pm, etc.). Please do not send e-mails in the middle of the hour.
At the end of the two hours, compose an e-mail to the group stating what you’ve accomplished and what you want to accomplish in the next two hours.
At this time, you may give feedback to others on the list. Appropriate feedback would be “atta boy,” “what went wrong,” and “you’ll do better next hour.” Please don’t get involved in long-winded e-mails and/or back and forths – if you want to do that, contact the person privately.
You should spend no more than 5 minutes on feedback to others on the list – i.e., you should be back to work on your next project within 10 minutes after the hour (this allows time to compose your e-mail and give feedback).
If your feedback comes in late, expect to not receive feedback for that hour – don’t have hurt feelings, just get better about posting on time!
At this time, I’m not going to limit the days or hours of participation. Solopreneurs can keep some odd hours, so do what works for you. However, if you’re working at 3:00am, don’t be surprised if no one else is on the list – or maybe there’ll be a bunch of people! You can still get feedback the next morning, if participants are so inclined, so it can still act as a motivating experience.
